ART 3504: Sound, Medium And Material Fall 2024.

Amplify a quiet activity or phenomenon through the use of constructed audio.
Use Foley to reveal, exaggerate, or make us believe we are close to something very or barely audible. 
This is not as simple as recording and turning up the volume. 

This assignment requires a fresh, accompanying medium:
Will you juxtapose or offer a literal compliment to your sound?

Haptic = touch
Performative = craft a performance
Moving image = video
Still image (printed) 
Tangible Media, like a sculpture. 

Sound will be played through the speakers in class. 
Give yourself time to set up. 

Sample Works:

Caraeoke 2017. Installation invervention.
5 strangers pile into a car. The car is live mic’d. Mixed externally.
Everyone outside of the car hears the people singing.

E N C O U N T E R | Sound Walking in Blacksburg. Spring 2018

Prompt: Escort/Encounter
The sound walk is a sonic overlay onto an existing space in the world. 
Every place has a story, every place is familiar to someone, and a complete mystery to someone else. Every place has paths that haven’t been revealed.
My wish is for your to craft a sound walk a la Janet Cardiff, in the local area that anyone in this class can experience on their own time.

Create a map, images, and of course, incorporate sound into the walk. The walk should have a fixed path, desired duration, audio accompaniment. You will need to field record, mix, and build the experience on your own so that you can provide for others to experience. Try not to be too obvious about the locations i.e. I don't want to go to the duck pond 3 times for 3 different walks.



Duration variable.
Location, your choice, but must be in physical space.
