Folio 5: ART 2704 Project 1: The Lost Childhood Object

Prompt

How it started in 2017: For the first few years, I taught 3D and wanted to make it artful and personal. I’m particularly interested in the intangibility and non-real qualities of 3D computer graphics and how they relate to memory.
For this project, I ask students to recall a lost childhood object that is lost to time, model it, and render it in a substrate or context that reflects the fuzziness of memory.

In the first edition of the assignment, I was excited to see what students could do.

Ideation, Sketching, Modeling, Rendering, and Compositing.

Much has changed in my teaching. I treat each semester like two classes: An intensive 8-week Maya skill class that then becomes an applied creativity class. Today, before administering the memory project assignment, students practice the pipeline on their morphology project, which is part of their midterm.
