Concept: Doubt
As an artist I’m drawn to idiosyncrasies that people have, juxtaposition and subversion, the
female perspective and histories and transformations. These are themes to which I'm most
drawn and the space where I’m most intrigued creating. I get roadblocked a lot when I try to
move away from the human form or anything that doesn’t describe or is described by a person.
Non-human organisms and objects inspire me but when it comes down to the wire I feel like I
resort to the same themes and contexts which is frustrating.
I’m struggling with moving outside of creating a human or humanoid form (or anything
particularly familiar, for that matter) to create something that comes across as new without being
an invertebrate blob.
With this project I hope to stretch my imagination through exploring form, symbolism, and
juxtaposition to create a manifestation of an internal fear or character flaw.
Getting there! Subject to change
This week (9/11-9/18) Plants + Machines
0. Might add a week here or between due dates for studying, taking notes and learning.
1. 9/18-9/23 Have a rough form (along with working concepts) done in Maya
2. 9/23-9/30 Zbrush modeling, concept development and UV map
3. 9/30-10/2 Texturing in Substance, sub-surface scattering (?)
4. 10/2-10/9 Rigging (and lots of tutorials)
5. 10/9-10/16 Environment development
6. 10/16 Revision, critique and rendering (animation if possible)
By midterm I want a developed piece that I can feel proud of and use for portfolios.
Long project with milestones works far better for me because I feel like I’m a “develop an idea
from a starting point and bring depth and polish to it” kind of person rather than a “start 7,000
small projects which I might half ass because I feel less investment and will treat them like
experiments” kind of person.
I really like Zbrush and I feel like in order to bring my work to the next level I’d like to get more
comfortable with Maya, Zbrush, and especially Substance on a more intimate level (which is
funny cause wtf is baking meshes? Wtf is an alpha level? Masking? 3D modeling for dummies
amiright). I’d also like to look into Keyshot for the sole purpose that I’ve seen some sweeeet
work made in that program by some artists I admire on instagram.
I’ll know that my work for this project is done when I don’t look back on it and feel like I
neglected something. I have this habit of concentrating more on one part of a work and
neglecting the parts that interest me less to a degree so I want to avoid that. Also you can tell
when everything in a piece has been thought of and cared for, it’s well rounded and polished so
that’s what I want to accomplish.
